I Compared Three Popular Clean Beauty Mascaras

Here’s What I Found

August 28, 2026

My Clean Beauty Bottom Line

After comparing all three mascaras, one thing became clear to me: you don't have to choose between cleaner ingredients and a mascara designed to perform.

All three combine thoughtfully selected ingredients with lash-enhancing benefits, but each one emphasizes something a little different. The best choice depends on the look you want, the ingredients you prioritize, and whether you're looking for length, definition, or more noticeable volume.

Choose 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara if you want...

  • An exceptionally plant-focused mascara formula

  • Natural pigment sources from fruit, tea, and cocoa

  • Longer-looking, defined, separated lashes

  • A formula with conditioning ingredients like castor oil, jojoba oil, provitamin B5, biotin, and vitamin E

  • A water-resistant formula without choosing a traditional waterproof mascara

  • Multiple color options beyond traditional black

  • A formula that avoids many of the ingredients I personally prefer to leave out of my makeup

  • A mascara where ingredient quality and natural-focused formulation are top priorities

Skip it if: Dramatic volume is your biggest priority, certified-organic ingredients are especially important to you, or you'd prefer to try a mini/travel size before committing to a full-size mascara.

Choose ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara if you want...

  • Longer, lifted, defined, and separated lashes

  • A balanced everyday mascara that doesn't create an overly heavy look

  • Lash-care ingredients including biotin, arginine, nettle extract, and a peptide

  • Several clearly identified organic ingredients

  • A dual-sided wand that helps both build and separate the lashes

  • Up to 12 hours of resistance to flaking and smudging

  • A formula that rinses away with warm water without excessive scrubbing or tugging

  • An ophthalmologist-tested formula suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers

  • A rich brown option in addition to soft black

  • A mini/travel size that allows you to try the formula before committing to the full size

Skip it if: Maximum dramatic volume is your main goal, you're looking for a waterproof mascara, or you need a vegan formula since it contains beeswax.

Choose RMS Beauty Straight Up™ Volumizing Peptide Mascara if you want...

  • Fuller, more dramatic-looking lashes

  • A mascara focused primarily on volume and lift

  • A buildable formula that can create a more noticeable lash look

  • Peptide technology and lash-supporting ingredients like arginine and white tea extract

  • Some certified-organic ingredients

  • Up to 12 hours of volume and lift

  • A formula designed to resist smudging, flaking, and clumping

  • An ophthalmologist-tested mascara

  • Long wear without choosing a traditional waterproof formula

  • A travel size that lets you try the mascara before committing to the full size

Skip it if: You prefer an extremely subtle lash look, want a precise comb-style wand focused primarily on separation, or need a truly waterproof mascara.

My Final Thoughts

If I had to describe each mascara in one sentence, here's how I'd sum them up:

100% PURE is the natural-focused choice, combining an exceptionally plant-focused ingredient list and unique fruit, tea, and cocoa pigments with a formula designed primarily for length and separation.

ILIA is the balanced everyday choice, combining length, lift, separation, organic and lash-care ingredients, long wear, and easy removal in a formula that I personally use.

RMS is the volume-focused choice, combining peptide technology and thoughtfully selected ingredients with a buildable formula designed to create more noticeable volume, lift, and a fuller-looking lash line.

Each of these mascaras avoids many of the ingredients that I personally prefer to leave out of my makeup, but they aren't designed to create exactly the same lash look. If exceptionally clean, natural-focused ingredients and length are your priorities, 100% PURE stands out. If you want a balanced everyday combination of length, lift, definition, and easy wear, ILIA is a great option. And if fuller, more dramatic volume is what you're after, RMS is the one I'd look at first.

Ultimately, the best clean mascara is the one that fits both your ingredient standards and the way you actually want your lashes to look.

I only recommend products that meet my research criteria and that I believe are worth considering.

Finding a clean mascara isn't always as simple as choosing the one labeled "clean." Every brand has its own philosophy, ingredient standards, and formulation approach, making it difficult to know which products truly align with your priorities.

To help simplify the process, I researched and compared some of today's most popular clean mascaras using The Clean Beauty Lifestyle Rating System. Rather than relying on marketing claims alone, every product is evaluated using the same transparent criteria for Ingredient Quality, Fragrance Transparency, Organic Ingredients, and Overall Rating.

If you're new to my reviews, I recommend reading How We Rate Products to see exactly how products earn their scores. You can also visit Ingredients to Avoid in Clean Beauty to learn more about the ingredient categories that are commonly discussed throughout my reviews and why some consumers choose to avoid them.

For this comparison, I evaluated each mascara for ingredient quality, formula transparency, lash-enhancing benefits, length, volume, definition, wear, and overall performance. While no mascara is perfect for everyone, the products below were selected because they combine cleaner ingredient standards with formulas designed to perform.

Whether you're looking for naturally defined lashes, noticeable length and separation, buildable volume, or a mascara that can hold up throughout the day, there's an option that may be a great fit for your needs.

For this comparison, I'm looking at 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara, RMS Beauty Straight Up™ Volumizing Peptide Mascara, and ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara. I personally use the ILIA mascara, so I'll also be able to share some of my own experience with that formula.

Let's take a closer look at how they compare.

100% PURE Fruit Pigmented Ultra Lengthening Mascara

100% PURE takes a particularly natural-focused approach to makeup, and its Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara is a great example of what makes the brand different. The formula uses a combination of plant-derived ingredients, natural waxes, botanical extracts, vitamins, and pigments derived in part from black tea, berries, and cocoa.

After reviewing the current formula and comparing it with the other clean mascaras in this article, 100% PURE stands out for its exceptionally plant-focused ingredient list and unique approach to pigmentation. It's specifically designed to create longer, more defined and separated lashes while incorporating ingredients that help condition the lashes as you wear it.

What I Like

Ingredient Quality: One of the Cleanest Mascara Formulas I Reviewed

The ingredient list is what really makes 100% PURE stand out.

After reviewing the current formula, I don't see many of the ingredients I personally prefer to avoid in clean makeup, including:

  • Parabens

  • Phthalates

  • PFAS

  • Talc

  • Mineral oil

  • Petrolatum

  • PEGs

  • Phenoxyethanol

  • Synthetic fragrance

100% PURE also specifically states that the mascara is formulated without coal tar, Teflon, and other petrochemicals.

Instead, the formula is built largely around ingredients such as aloe vera juice, bamboo charcoal, hydrogenated jojoba oil, rice starch, candelilla wax, castor oil, carnauba wax, black tea, fruit extracts, vitamins, and plant-derived gums.

From an ingredient-quality standpoint, this is exactly the type of formula I hope to find when reviewing clean makeup.

Lash-Conditioning Ingredients

100% PURE goes beyond simply adding color to the lashes and incorporates several ingredients that can help condition them.

Some that stood out to me include:

Provitamin B5, which 100% PURE says helps moisturize and strengthen.

Vitamin E, an antioxidant that also provides conditioning benefits.

Biotin, which is included as part of the vitamin-rich formula.

Castor oil, which helps condition the lashes.

Hydrogenated jojoba oil, which contributes conditioning benefits while also helping create the texture of the formula.

The formula also incorporates plant waxes such as candelilla and carnauba wax to help coat and define the lashes.

I don't expect mascara to replace a dedicated lash treatment, but I appreciate seeing a formula built around conditioning ingredients rather than focusing solely on pigment and wear.

Fragrance Transparency: Full Ingredient Disclosure

Fragrance is something I pay particularly close attention to in products applied around the eyes.

The current complete ingredient lists don't contain generic "fragrance" or "parfum," and 100% PURE individually discloses the ingredients used in the formula rather than hiding them behind an unspecified fragrance blend.

The formula does contain phenethyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol, but both are individually identified on the ingredient list. 100% PURE describes phenethyl alcohol as a naturally occurring component in roses and benzyl alcohol as a component of essential oils.

Because the formula is fully disclosed and doesn't contain an undisclosed fragrance or parfum blend, I think it earns a full 5-star Fragrance Transparency rating.

Natural Pigments From Fruit, Tea, and Cocoa

One of the most distinctive things about this mascara is 100% PURE's approach to pigmentation.

The brand uses natural pigment sources including black tea, berries, and cocoa, with the exact botanical extracts and permitted mineral pigments varying depending on the shade.

The mascara comes in several colors:

  • Black Tea — midnight black

  • Blackberry — deep neutral purple

  • Blueberry — deep denim blue

  • Dark Chocolate — deep cocoa brown

I especially like that the shade range gives you alternatives to traditional black mascara while maintaining the brand's natural-focused approach to formulation.

Designed for Length and Separation

As the name suggests, this mascara is primarily designed around length and separation rather than dramatic volume.

100% PURE uses a slim hourglass wand designed to coat individual lashes, while the formula is intended to lengthen and separate without clumping, smudging, or flaking.

The brand also reports encouraging consumer-testing results:

  • 100% said the mascara was easy to apply.

  • 94% said it enhanced the appearance of their lashes.

  • 91% said it lengthened the look of their lashes.

  • 91% said it didn't flake throughout the day.

Individual results will always vary, but I think these results are encouraging—particularly if length and definition are your biggest priorities in a mascara.

Water-Resistant Without Being Waterproof

100% PURE describes this formula as water-resistant.

I think that's an important distinction because it provides some resistance to moisture during everyday wear without being positioned as a traditional waterproof mascara.

If you don't specifically need a waterproof formula, this may offer a nice balance between staying power and everyday wearability.

Things to Consider

Organic Ingredients Aren't Clearly Identified

This is probably the biggest distinction between the mascara's excellent Ingredient Quality score and its Organic Ingredients score.

The formula is impressively plant-focused, but natural and organic aren't the same thing. The current product page doesn't identify the mascara as USDA Organic Certified or clearly designate the botanical ingredients in the complete ingredient lists as certified organic.

Because I don't want to assume an ingredient is organic simply because it's botanical, I think a 3-star Organic Ingredients rating is the most appropriate.

That's still a respectable score, but it's an important distinction if certified-organic ingredients are one of your highest priorities.

It's More About Length Than Dramatic Volume

If you're looking for very thick, dramatic lashes, this probably wouldn't be my first choice of the mascaras in this comparison.

100% PURE specifically designed this formula around lengthening and separating the lashes.

That's a major benefit if longer, defined lashes are what you're looking for, but someone who prioritizes noticeable volume and a fuller-looking lash line may prefer a formula designed specifically around that effect.

Botanical Ingredients Aren't Perfect for Everyone

This mascara contains a number of plant-derived ingredients, including aloe, fruit extracts, black tea, castor oil, jojoba oil, and plant waxes.

I generally like seeing thoughtfully selected botanical ingredients, but "natural" doesn't automatically mean non-irritating. Botanical ingredients can still cause sensitivities or allergic reactions in some people, which is particularly important to consider with a product applied so close to the eyes.

If you have especially sensitive eyes or known botanical allergies, it's always worth reviewing the complete ingredient list carefully.

Natural Ingredients Can Vary

100% PURE notes that its natural ingredients may vary somewhat in color and consistency.

That isn't necessarily a negative, but it's something worth knowing if you're accustomed to highly standardized conventional mascara formulas.

My Overall Thoughts

100% PURE Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara stands out as one of the strongest clean mascara options I've reviewed from an ingredient perspective.

What impresses me most is how plant-focused the formula is. Rather than simply removing a handful of ingredients commonly avoided in clean beauty, 100% PURE builds the formula around aloe, plant waxes, jojoba and castor oils, botanical extracts, vitamins, and natural pigment sources. It's the option I'd look at when exceptionally clean ingredients, natural-focused pigmentation, length, and separation are higher priorities.

The biggest limitation for me is that, despite its very natural-focused ingredient list, the current product page doesn't provide enough information about certified-organic ingredients for me to give it a higher Organic Ingredients rating. I also wish a smaller travel size were available for someone who wants to try the formula before committing to a full-size tube.

If you're looking for a mascara that prioritizes exceptionally clean ingredients while creating longer, defined, separated lashes, 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara is one of the best options I've reviewed and earns a 5-star Overall Rating.

RMS Beauty Straight Up Volumizing Peptide Mascara

RMS Beauty has long focused on combining thoughtfully selected ingredients with high-performing makeup, and Straight Up™ Volumizing Peptide Mascara is designed for anyone looking for noticeable volume and lift without sacrificing ingredient quality.

After reviewing the current formula and comparing it with the other clean mascaras in this article, RMS stands out for combining a relatively streamlined ingredient list with lash-supporting ingredients, long-wearing performance, and a formula specifically designed to create fuller, more dramatic-looking lashes.

What I Like

Ingredient Quality: A Strong Clean Formula

The first thing that stood out to me when reviewing RMS Straight Up™ Volumizing Peptide Mascara was its relatively streamlined ingredient list.

After reviewing the current formula, I don't see many of the ingredients I personally prefer to avoid in clean makeup, including:

  • Parabens

  • Phthalates

  • PFAS

  • Talc

  • Mineral oil

  • Petrolatum

  • PEGs

  • Phenoxyethanol

  • Synthetic fragrance

RMS also specifically identifies the mascara as sulfate-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, non-nano, and non-GMO.

Instead, the formula incorporates ingredients such as candelilla wax, certified-organic shea butter, glycerin, carnauba wax, certified-organic non-GMO corn starch, radish root ferment, arginine, white tea leaf extract, glycoproteins, and Oligopeptide-2.

From an ingredient-quality standpoint, I think this is an excellent formula and a strong match for the standards I look for in clean makeup.

Peptides and Lash-Supporting Ingredients

One of the features that makes this mascara particularly interesting is RMS's focus on caring for the lashes while creating volume.

The formula contains several ingredients worth highlighting:

Oligopeptide-2, which is part of RMS's Pro Peptide technology and is included in a formula designed to help strengthen, nourish, and support healthier-looking lashes.

Arginine, an amino acid commonly used for its conditioning properties.

White tea leaf extract, an antioxidant-rich botanical that RMS says helps protect against free radicals.

Shea butter, which helps condition and soften.

RMS says its Pro Peptide technology helps strengthen, revitalize, and thicken the appearance of the lashes.

I don't expect mascara to take the place of a dedicated lash treatment, but I appreciate seeing a formula designed with lash conditioning in mind rather than focusing solely on pigment and wear.

Fragrance Transparency: Full Ingredient Disclosure

Fragrance is something I pay particularly close attention to in products applied around the eyes.

The current RMS ingredient list doesn't contain generic "fragrance" or "parfum," and the ingredients are individually disclosed rather than hidden behind an unspecified fragrance blend.

The formula does contain phenethyl alcohol, but it's clearly identified as an individual ingredient.

Because the formula is fully disclosed and doesn't contain an undisclosed fragrance or parfum blend, I think it earns a full 5-star Fragrance Transparency rating.

Some Certified-Organic Ingredients

RMS specifically identifies two ingredients in the current formula as certified organic:

  • Shea butter

  • Non-GMO corn starch

I appreciate that RMS clearly identifies which ingredients are certified organic rather than simply describing the entire formula as natural or organic.

However, only these two ingredients are specifically identified as certified organic, and the mascara itself isn't presented as a certified-organic formula. For that reason, I think a 3-star Organic Ingredients rating is the most appropriate.

It's still a positive feature, but I don't think the amount of clearly identified organic content is substantial enough to justify a higher rating.

Designed for Volume and Lift

This is where RMS really distinguishes itself from the other mascaras in this comparison.

Straight Up™ is specifically designed to deliver dramatic volume and lift while also helping the lashes look longer and fuller.

RMS uses a plush brush designed to deposit product onto the lashes and help build a more noticeable effect. You can also layer additional coats if you want more volume.

That makes this particularly appealing if your priority is fuller, more dramatic-looking lashes rather than primarily separation or a very natural lash effect.

Tri-Locking System for Long Wear

RMS uses what it calls a Tri-Locking System, which consists of three ingredients:

  • Candelilla wax

  • Carnauba wax

  • Non-GMO corn starch

According to RMS, these ingredients wrap around the lashes to help create long-lasting wear that resists smudging, flaking, and clumping.

I like that RMS actually identifies the ingredients behind this technology rather than simply referring to a proprietary system without explaining what it contains.

Designed for 12 Hours of Volume and Lift

RMS says Straight Up™ delivers up to 12 hours of dramatic volume and lift.

The brand also reports the following consumer study results:

  • 96% agreed it added lift to their lashes.

  • 93% agreed their lashes looked lengthened.

  • 93% agreed it instantly added dramatic volume.

  • 90% agreed it made their lash line look fuller.

These results came from a seven-day consumer study involving 33 individuals.

Individual results will always vary, but I think these findings are encouraging—particularly if volume and lift are your biggest priorities in a mascara.

Ophthalmologist Tested

RMS states that Straight Up™ is ophthalmologist tested.

I always consider that a positive with mascara because it's a product applied so close to the eyes.

Of course, ophthalmologist testing doesn't guarantee that every person will tolerate a formula, particularly if you have very sensitive eyes or specific ingredient allergies, but it's still a reassuring feature.

Easy Removal Without Being Waterproof

Straight Up™ isn't a waterproof mascara.

Instead, RMS says its oil-water formula is designed for easy removal without excessive tugging or lash breakage. The brand recommends using its cleansing balm, followed by warm water or a damp washcloth.

For everyday mascara, I think that's a reasonable tradeoff. You still get a formula designed to resist smudging and flaking without the more difficult removal that often comes with traditional waterproof mascara.

Available in a Travel Size

Another feature I really like is that Straight Up™ is available in both full and travel sizes.

A travel size gives you a lower-commitment way to try the mascara before deciding whether the full size is right for you.

Mascara is one of those products that can be especially personal. The formula, brush, and finished effect can perform very differently depending on your lashes and preferences, so having a smaller size available gives you the opportunity to test the volume, wear, application, and removal first.

It's also convenient for travel or for someone who doesn't wear mascara frequently enough to go through a full-size tube quickly.

Things to Consider

It's Primarily a Volumizing Mascara

Straight Up™ is the most volume-focused of the mascaras in this comparison.

That's a major benefit if fuller, more dramatic lashes are what you're looking for, but it may be more mascara than you need if your preference is an extremely subtle or barely-there lash look.

The formula is buildable, however, so the number of coats you apply gives you some control over the final effect.

It's Not Waterproof

RMS specifically states that Straight Up™ isn't waterproof.

Its Tri-Locking System is designed to resist smudging and flaking, but if you specifically need a mascara for swimming or situations where true waterproof performance is important, this isn't designed for that purpose.

For everyday wear, however, I appreciate that RMS focuses on long wear while keeping the formula relatively easy to remove.

Organic Ingredients Are Limited

Although RMS uses certified-organic shea butter and non-GMO corn starch, the entire formula isn't certified organic.

That's why I give it a 3-star Organic Ingredients rating rather than a higher score.

If certified-organic ingredients are one of your highest priorities when choosing makeup, this is something worth considering.

Botanical Ingredients Aren't Perfect for Everyone

The formula contains botanical ingredients such as shea butter and white tea leaf extract.

I generally like seeing thoughtfully selected botanical ingredients, but plant-derived or organic doesn't automatically mean non-irritating. Anyone with particularly sensitive eyes or known ingredient allergies should still review the complete ingredient list carefully.

The Plush Brush May Not Suit Everyone

The plush brush is specifically designed to help build volume and create a more dramatic effect.

If you prefer a very precise comb-style applicator that focuses primarily on individually separating each lash, you may prefer the style of wand used by a more definition-focused mascara.

This really comes down to the type of lash effect you're trying to achieve.

My Overall Thoughts

RMS Beauty Straight Up™ Volumizing Peptide Mascara is one of the strongest clean options I've reviewed for someone who wants noticeable volume and lift without sacrificing ingredient quality.

What stands out most to me is how well the formula balances performance with thoughtful formulation. It avoids many of the ingredients I personally prefer to leave out of my makeup while incorporating certified-organic ingredients, white tea extract, arginine, and peptide technology designed to support healthier-looking lashes.

It also fills a distinct role in this comparison. While some mascaras focus primarily on natural-looking length and separation, RMS is the option I'd look at when volume, lift, and a fuller-looking lash line are higher priorities.

I also really like that RMS offers a travel size. If you're unsure whether a volumizing formula or plush mascara brush will work for your lashes, having the option to try a smaller tube first makes it easier to test the product before committing to the full size.

If you're looking for a clean mascara with excellent ingredient quality, some certified-organic ingredients, lash-supporting benefits, long-wearing performance, and a more volumized and lifted effect, RMS Beauty Straight Up™ Volumizing Peptide Mascara is an excellent option and earns a 5-star Overall Rating.

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara

ILIA has become one of the most recognizable names in clean beauty, and Limitless Lash Mascara is one of the brand's bestselling products. Designed to lengthen, lift, and separate, it combines long-wearing performance with ingredients chosen to help condition and support the lashes.

After reviewing the current formula alongside the other clean mascaras, I think ILIA strikes an excellent balance between ingredient quality, lash-enhancing ingredients, everyday performance, and ease of use.

What I Like

Ingredient Quality: A Thoughtfully Formulated Clean Mascara

The first thing I look at with any mascara is the ingredient list—especially because it's a product applied so close to the eyes.

After reviewing the current ingredient list, I don't see many of the ingredients I personally prefer to avoid in clean makeup, including:

  • Parabens

  • Phthalates

  • PFAS

  • Talc

  • Mineral oil

  • Petrolatum

  • PEGs

  • Phenoxyethanol

  • Synthetic fragrance

Instead, the formula includes ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter, glycerin, carnauba wax, corn starch, radish root ferment, biotin, nettle extract, arginine, and a lash-supporting peptide.

From an ingredient-quality perspective, I think this is a very strong formula and one that fits well within the standards I look for when reviewing clean makeup.

Lash-Care Ingredients

One of the things I particularly like about Limitless Lash is that ILIA doesn't formulate it solely around color and hold.

The mascara contains several ingredients that help condition and support the lashes, including:

Biotin, which ILIA incorporates as part of its lash-care approach.

Arginine, an amino acid commonly used for its conditioning properties.

Nettle extract, a botanical ingredient incorporated into the formula.

Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, a peptide used in lash-focused formulas.

Shea butter, which helps condition and soften.

ILIA describes the formula as delivering lash-care ingredients with every application. I wouldn't expect mascara to replace a dedicated lash serum, but I appreciate that the formula goes beyond simply coating the lashes with pigment.

Fragrance Transparency: Formulated Without Fragrance

Fragrance is something I'm especially mindful of in products used around the eyes.

ILIA specifically states that Limitless Lash is formulated without fragrance, and the current ingredient list doesn't contain generic "fragrance" or "parfum." The complete formula is disclosed rather than hiding ingredients behind an unspecified fragrance blend.

The formula does contain phenethyl alcohol, but this ingredient is individually disclosed rather than being hidden under a generic fragrance designation.

For that reason, I think ILIA earns a full 5-star rating for Fragrance Transparency.

Organic Ingredients Are Clearly Identified

This is an area where ILIA deserves some credit.

Unlike formulas that contain botanical ingredients without identifying whether they're organic, ILIA specifically marks several ingredients in the current formula as organic:

  • Organic beeswax

  • Organic shea butter

  • Organic carnauba wax

  • Organic corn starch

The entire formula isn't certified organic, and not every ingredient can realistically be organic, so I wouldn't give it a perfect score in this category.

However, the deliberate use of several clearly identified organic ingredients earns it a strong 4-star Organic Ingredients rating.

Length, Lift, and Separation

Limitless Lash is designed primarily around length, lift, definition, and separation rather than extreme volume.

One feature that sets it apart is the dual-sided wand. The shorter side is designed to lift and define, while the longer side helps lengthen and separate the lashes with more precision.

Essentially, the wand works as both a mascara brush and a lash comb, giving you more control over the finished look.

That's one of the reasons I personally like this mascara. I prefer a formula that enhances and defines my lashes without making them look excessively heavy or clumpy.

Designed for Long Wear

ILIA says Limitless Lash is designed to resist flaking and smudging for up to 12 hours.

Actual wear can always vary depending on your skin, environment, activity level, and application, but I like that ILIA has focused on extended wear without turning this into a traditional waterproof mascara.

Easy to Remove With Warm Water

This is another feature I really appreciate.

Despite its long-wearing formula, ILIA says Limitless Lash rinses away with warm water without requiring excessive scrubbing or tugging around the delicate eye area.

It's worth noting that ILIA specifically says this isn't a tubing mascara, even though it offers the convenient warm-water removal often associated with tubing formulas.

For an everyday mascara, I think the combination of long wear and relatively easy removal is a significant advantage.

Suitable for Sensitive Eyes and Contact Lens Wearers

ILIA states that Limitless Lash is safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. It's also ophthalmologist-tested and formulated without fragrance.

No eye product can guarantee that it won't cause irritation for everyone, but I think these are meaningful features—particularly for people who tend to have trouble finding comfortable eye makeup.

Available in a Travel Size

Another advantage of ILIA is that you don't necessarily have to commit to the full-size mascara right away.

Limitless Lash is also available in a mini/travel size, giving you the opportunity to try the formula before committing to a full-size tube.

I think that's particularly helpful with premium clean beauty products. Mascara can perform very differently depending on your lashes and personal preferences, so being able to try a smaller size first takes some of the risk out of experimenting with a new formula.

The mini is also a convenient option for travel or for someone who doesn't wear mascara frequently enough to go through a full-size tube quickly.

Two Shade Options

Limitless Lash is available in After Midnight, a soft black, and Before Dawn, a rich brown.

I like having the brown option because not everyone wants the intensity of traditional black mascara. A rich brown can create a softer, more natural-looking effect while still defining the lashes.

Things to Consider

It's a Premium Mascara

ILIA sits within the prestige clean beauty category, so this isn't intended to compete with conventional drugstore mascara.

For me, the combination of ingredient quality, clearly identified organic ingredients, lash-care ingredients, and performance makes it a compelling option, but cost may still be a consideration if you replace mascara frequently.

The availability of the mini size helps because it allows you to try the formula before committing to the full size.

It's More About Length Than Dramatic Volume

If your primary goal is extremely thick, dramatic lashes, Limitless Lash may not be the best match.

Its biggest strengths are lengthening, lifting, defining, and separating. ILIA itself recommends layering its Fullest Volumizing Mascara underneath Limitless Lash for people who want a thicker, more volumized effect.

If you prefer a more defined and lengthened lash look, however, this is where Limitless Lash really shines.

It Contains Beeswax

ILIA uses organic beeswax as one of the primary waxes in the formula.

I don't consider beeswax a problematic ingredient, and I actually appreciate that ILIA identifies it as organic. However, its inclusion means this mascara isn't appropriate for someone specifically looking for a vegan formula.

Botanical Ingredients Aren't Perfect for Everyone

ILIA incorporates ingredients such as shea butter and nettle extract along with other plant-derived ingredients.

I generally like seeing thoughtfully selected botanical ingredients, but natural ingredients can still cause sensitivities in some people.

If you have particularly reactive eyes or known botanical allergies, it's always worth reviewing the complete ingredient list before trying a new mascara.

My Overall Thoughts

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara is one of the most well-rounded clean mascaras I've reviewed, and it's also the mascara I personally use.

What I like most is the balance. The formula avoids many of the ingredients I personally prefer to leave out of my makeup while incorporating clearly identified organic ingredients and lash-care ingredients such as biotin, arginine, nettle extract, and Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17.

Performance is another strength. Rather than focusing on extreme volume, Limitless Lash is designed to create length, lift, separation, and definition, with a dual-sided wand that gives you more control over the finished look. It's also designed to resist flaking and smudging for extended wear while still rinsing away relatively easily with warm water.

I also think the availability of a mini size is an underrated advantage. If you're hesitant to commit to a full-size premium mascara without knowing how it will work for your lashes, the smaller size gives you a convenient way to try it first.

If you're looking for a clean mascara that combines thoughtfully selected ingredients, clearly identified organic ingredients, lash-conditioning benefits, long wear, easy removal, and defined, lengthened lashes, ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara is an excellent option and earns a 5-star Overall Rating.
